Description

The VLT Paranal Observatory in the Atacama Desert after sunset.Guided one day visit of the Paranal Observatory and the famous VLT telescope (very Large Telescope) on the 29th. Juny 2019. Paranal is an astronomical observatory operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO); it is located in the Atacama Desert on Cerro Paranal at 2.635 m (8,645 ft) altitude, 120 km (70 mi) south of Antofagasta. By total light-collecting area, it is the largest optical-infrared observatory in the Southern Hemisphere. The visit at the observatory begins at 14.00hrs and ends at 16.00hrs every saturday.

Itinerary

Start date and place: Saturday,  June 29 2019 in Antofagasta.
End date and place: Saturday,  June 29 2019 in Antofagasta.
Duration: 1 Day.

Day 1: Saturday, June 29 2019: Antofagasta – Paranal Observatory – Antofagasta.
At 9.00 am we meet with our guide and drive to Paranal. Once there we reunite with others corresponding to the same booked visit. Together we explore the inside of the Observatory during the two hours guided tour. After the visit we will have some time to explore the surroundings. Estimated arrival time back in Antofagasta at 7.00 pm.

In June – July it is winter time in Chile. In the area of Antofagasta temperatures will be rather low, with 0°C early in the morning and 15°C to 20°C around 1 – 2 pm. Warm clothing and wind stopper jacket are recommended.

Difficulty: Easy tour, not physical effort involved.
