Tatio Geysire near San Pedro de Atacama in the Atacama Desert.The Tatio Geyser is one of the most important tourist attractions in San Pedro de Atacama. It is located at 4,290 meters above sea level in the Andean highlands of the Antofagasta region, in northern Chile. The name “El Tatio”, in Kunz language “Tata-IU”, means “the weeping grandfather”.

It is the group of Geyser located at the highest altitude in the world.

The water emerges at a temperature of 86 °C, which is boiling point at that elevation. The exact origin of the heat source that generates the necessary energy is unknown. It may be an igneous intrusion or magma.

The Tatio Geysire are located at 4.290 meters over sea level .The water Tank is located inside the volcanic rocks and covered by impervious layers. The existing faults in the rocks and the pressure generated by the evaporation lead the hot water to the surface producing the Fontana effect at its starting points. It is estimated that approximately 100,000 people annually visit the place to witness this phenomenon in the heart of the Chilean highlands.

Itinerary

04.30 – 05.00 Pick up at your hotel.

07.00 – 07.45 Arrival and visit of the geothermal field including a walk at low morning temperatures for the observation of geysers.

08.00 – 08.30 Continental Breakfast in Situ.

08.30 – 09.30 Second walk into the central field area ontime with the upgoing sun.

09.30 – 10.00 Open air thermal bath in natural tempered waters.

10.00 – 11.00 Visit to the Bofedal de Putana, Observation of local flora and fauna.

11.00 – 11.30 Visit of the village of Machuca and tasting of llama skewers and local sopaipillas.

11.30 – 12.30 Return to Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama.

This tour is available all the year around depending on the weather conditions and the related indications of the local authorities.

This excursion does not require physical effort, but it has a certain degree of difficulty related to the cold of the morning, which can reach less 15 degrees Celsius in the colder periods, and with the height, since it is climbed from San Pedro that is to 2,400 meters to 4, 290 MTS .
