The Tatio Geyser is one of the most important tourist attractions in San Pedro de Atacama. It is located at 4,290 meters above sea level in the Andean highlands of the Antofagasta region, in northern Chile. The name “El Tatio”, in Kunz language “Tata-IU”, means “the weeping grandfather”.
The geothermal field of 10 square kilometers of surface comprises 110 geysires and springs and represents the largest group of geyser in the southern hemisphere and the third in size worldwide, after Yellowstone in the United States and the Kronotski Nature reserve in Russia. It is the group of Geyser located at the highest altitude in the world.
The water and steam eruptions are not high and reach an average height of 75 cm. The water emerges at a temperature of 86 °C, which is boiling point at that elevation. The exact origin of the heat source that generates the necessary energy is unknown. It may be an igneous intrusion or magma.
The water Tank is located inside the volcanic rocks and covered by impervious layers. The existing faults in the rocks and the pressure generated by the evaporation lead the hot water to the surface producing the Fontana effect at its starting points. It is estimated that approximately 100,000 people annually visit the place to witness this phenomenon in the heart of the Chilean highlands.
Machuca village, located at 45 kms. Of San Pedro de Atacama, is a typical housing group of the Andean highlands. It is formed by about 20 houses, a church and houses of commerce. Its inhabitants live from the raising of alpacas and handicrafts. A short time ago the construction of a hotel was beginning to offer alternatives of lodging to the visitors of the zone.
